News Summary

UMass Boston and Bunker Hill Community College have introduced the Future Beacon Joint Admissions Program to streamline the transfer process for students. This initiative simplifies admissions and provides resources to help diverse student populations, including urban residents and first-generation college students, navigate their educational journeys more easily. Students graduating from BHCC with a GPA of 2.0 or higher are guaranteed admission to UMass Boston, alongside several financial incentives. The program reflects a commitment to creating inclusive educational pathways and supports Boston’s diverse student body.

Boston Celebrates New Pathways for Students

In an exciting development for local students, UMass Boston and Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) have teamed up to launch the “Future Beacon Joint Admissions Program.” This partnership aims to simplify the transfer process between the two institutions, making it easier than ever for students to pursue their educational dreams.

The announcement was made on September 25, marking a significant step forward in creating supportive pathways for students who wish to continue their education. Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco of UMass Boston expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, highlighting its potential to help students navigate their career paths more seamlessly.

BHCC: A Major Source of Transfer Students

Did you know that Bunker Hill Community College is actually the largest source of transfer students to UMass Boston? Approximately 300 students make that jump each year, and UMass Boston’s doors swing open to welcome over 1,500 new transfer students annually, more than any public university in Massachusetts!

The joint admissions program specifically benefits a diverse group of students, including urban residents, first-generation college students, immigrant families, and those who are considered post-traditional learners. This makes for a truly inclusive initiative that caters to the needs of a broad spectrum of the community.

Streamlined Transitions for Students

Under this new agreement, students have the unique opportunity to apply to both UMass Boston and BHCC at the same time. This means a much more streamlined transition process, easing the worries of students who might find the current system a bit daunting. But that’s not all! Bunker Hill students will now have access to a variety of UMass Boston resources, including a UMass Boston Student ID, Wi-Fi, athletic events, andStudent Life programming. They can even utilize the Beacon Fitness Center and access the Healey Library resources.

Students graduating from BHCC with a GPA of 2.0 or better (excluding competitive programs) can breathe easy knowing they are guaranteed admission to UMass Boston. On top of that, the program includes fee waivers for enrollment deposits and merit scholarships of up to $2,000 per year for eligible students! That’s a tremendous boost for many aspiring scholars.

Enrollment Trends and Demographic Challenges

0.1% in overall enrollment across the UMass system. It’s evident that despite some funding challenges related to infrastructure, UMass Boston is working hard to adapt to changing demographics. President Marty Meehan of UMass has brought attention to the challenges facing universities in the Northeast stemming from declining populations of high school graduates.

13,085 students. This is a positive contrast to other campuses like UMass Lowell, which have seen declines in enrollment numbers.

Creating a Diverse Future

most diverse in the university’s history, with an impressive 50% of students of color across the system and an even higher figure of 73% at UMass Boston specifically. This diversity enriches the educational experience and reflects the community that these institutions serve.

Future Beacon Joint Admissions Program is certainly a step in the right direction for Boston’s students. With new opportunities and support systems in place, the future looks bright for those eager to further their education and build their careers!
