What makes this exhibition so special? It’s the first time that the MFA has presented an exhibition solely dedicated to the Roulin family. Visitors will be treated to an incredible selection of 23 artworks, including 14 portraits out of the 26 that van Gogh created during his stay in sunny Arles, France, between 1888 and 1889. These portraits capture the essence of the Roulin family, which included postman Joseph Roulin and his loving wife Augustine, along with their delightful children Armand, Camille, and Marcelle.

Among the treasures on display are ten heartfelt correspondences exchanged between van Gogh and Joseph Roulin, giving viewers a unique glimpse into the bonding moments of this artistic friendship. The director of the MFA highlighted that the exhibition portrays van Gogh’s emotional quest for connection during a pivotal period of his life. How heartfelt is that?

It’s a chance to see how various influences, from earlier Dutch art to Japanese woodblock prints, shaped his breathtaking style.
