Boston Bank Employees Charged in Daring Theft Scheme

In a shocking turn of events, three former employees of Citizens Bank have found themselves facing charges for allegedly stealing nearly $90,000 from unsuspecting customer accounts. The individuals involved in this brazen act are Yeimaly Moscat, 23, Yojairis Suazo, 21, and Angelica Morales, 31, with ties to Boston and Mattapan.

The Allegations Unfold

The trio has been charged with some serious offenses, including larceny over $1,200 by scheme, embezzlement by a bank employee, conspiracy to commit larceny, and attempted larceny. So, what exactly did these employees do? Well, it appears they exploited their positions of trust to pull off a coordinated theft.

Between September and November of 2022, Moscat processed a whopping $40,900 in unauthorized withdrawals from customer accounts. Not to be outdone, Suazo conducted 15 similar unauthorized withdrawals totaling $30,850 at a Dorchester branch around the same time. Meanwhile, Morales entered the picture in 2023, making five unauthorized transactions totaling $20,000 from a Milton branch during November and December.

How Did They Get Away with It?

What’s particularly troubling is how these transactions slipped through the cracks. The funds were processed as if they were from known customers, even though the funds were actually going to individuals who didn’t hold accounts at Citizens Bank. This clever ruse allowed the three employees to bypass standard banking security measures, leading to a significant loss for customers.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The thefts came to light when Citizens Bank initiated an investigation after noticing suspicious transactions. In response, Moscat and Suazo were arraigned at Middlesex Superior Court, where they were ordered to steer clear of all Citizens Bank locations. Moscat managed to secure release with a $1,000 bail, while Suazo was released on her own recognizance. Angelica Morales, on the other hand, is set for arraignment on December 12, 2024.

The Bigger Picture

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan highlighted the calculated nature of the crimes, indicating that these employees exploited their roles to orchestrate the thefts deliberately. This incident raises serious concerns about how banking institutions protect their customers and the integrity of their internal systems.

What Citizens Bank is Doing

In the wake of this scandal, a spokesperson from Citizens Bank reassured the public that the safety and security of customer accounts is a top priority. They emphasized that the bank has robust security measures in place to protect against unauthorized transactions and other threats.

Clearly, this situation serves as a reminder for customers to stay vigilant about their bank accounts. Regularly monitoring your account can help catch any suspicious activity before it gets out of hand. As this case continues to unfold, many will be watching closely to see how it impacts Citizens Bank and its clientele.

The Community Reaction

In a city like Boston, where many deposit their hard-earned money into banks, incidents like this can shake confidence. The worry over internal theft by trusted employees brings forth the need for enhanced scrutiny over who is managing one’s finances. Residents are likely hoping that justice will prevail and that measures will be put in place to prevent future occurrences.

This story isn’t just about three individuals; it’s about the trust that binds a community to its institutions. As the legal proceedings progress, the affected customers may find themselves seeking reassurance from their bank that their money is safe and that similar thefts will be thwarted in the future.
