Boston Magazine has released its 2024 rankings of public high schools in the Greater Boston area, highlighting excellence in education. Dover-Sherborn Regional High School tops the list, achieving an impressive 98.7% graduation rate. Following closely are Weston High School and Manchester Essex Regional High School, known for their strong performance and commitment to student success. While home prices in areas surrounding these schools can exceed $1 million, the emphasis on academic achievement remains clear. Parents and students can feel reassured knowing the wide array of outstanding educational options available.
Hello, Boston! It’s that time of year again when the spotlight shines brightly on our incredible public high schools. Yes, that’s right! Boston Magazine has just released its highly anticipated rankings for the top high schools in the Greater Boston area for 2024, and we are here to take you through the highlights.
This year, the rankings encompass a whopping 150 public high schools located within or partially within the I-495 corridor. The criteria for the rankings are thorough, focusing on important factors like enrollment figures, average class size, student-to-teacher ratios, graduation rates, and scores from standardized tests such as the MCAS and SAT. All of these metrics help give a clear picture of how well students are doing and how ready they are for the future.
Claiming the top spot this year is Dover-Sherborn Regional High School, making a fabulous leap from No. 3 last year to No. 1 in 2024! With its impressive 98.7% graduation rate—yep, that’s right, nearly all their students graduate—Dover-Sherborn offers a focused learning environment with an average class size of just 15.6 students. Even more impressive, its tenth graders boast proficiency scores of 86% in English and 88% in Math. Talk about a solid education foundation!
After Dover-Sherborn, we have Weston High School at No. 2. Last year, Weston held the top spot, but even so, it remains an outstanding choice with a graduation rate of 95.5% and an average SAT score of 656 in reading/writing and 672 in math. With a bit over 662 students, Weston brings a close-knit community feel to learning.
Landing in third place this year is Manchester Essex Regional High School. Although it slipped from the second place last year, it still maintains notable strengths. It boasts a 100% graduation rate! Though their standardized test scores are slightly lower with 78% proficiency in English and 71% in Math, Manchester Essex continues to pave the way for its graduates, with 74% of them heading off to college.
Now let’s not forget about Wayland High School, reclaiming the No. 4 position for the second consecutive year. Concord-Carlisle High School also showed great progress, jumping from No. 28 last year to fifth place. That’s an excellent improvement and certainly something to celebrate!
While this ranking doesn’t consider housing prices, it’s worth noting that many of the towns where these top schools reside experience an average home price exceeding a cool $1 million. Yes, you read that right! If you’re setting your sights on living in a community close to these high-achieving schools, it might come with quite a price tag.
And here’s the cherry on top: the magazine will continue to update us with various honor roll lists spotlighting schools for specific excellence in different areas like average class size, student-to-teacher ratios, and, of course, MCAS performance. It’s exciting to watch which schools will rise up and show off in the future!
The Greater Boston area has long been known for its dedication to education, and these rankings only reinforce the strength of our local high schools. Awesome to see such fantastic achievements! So, whether you’re a parent navigating school options or a student anxious about what’s ahead, it’s heartening to know there are so many great choices right here in our Boston backyard!
