Boston’s Culinary Scene Faces Shocking Shake-ups in March
Ah, Boston! The city known for its historical sites, its vibrant culture, and, of course, its incredible food scene is facing a difficult month with several beloved establishments closing their doors. It’s hard not to feel a little nostalgic as we bid farewell to some local favorites.
The End of an Era at Twin Donuts
Let’s start with a spot that has been a staple in the Allston neighborhood for 70 years—the iconic Twin Donuts. After selling its last doughnut on March 23, this treasured diner has officially closed up shop. The aroma of freshly baked goods that once filled the streets will now be just a memory. Chiang Sou Pang, the owner, and her family are keeping at it with two other diners, Cafe Mirror and Brighton Cafe, located conveniently within a mile. Thankfully, while we may be saying goodbye to Twin Donuts, we can still enjoy their other delicious offerings!
Guy Fieri’s Kitchen Bites the Dust Again
Not too far away, another noteworthy closure has taken place. Guy Fieri’s Boston Kitchen + Bar has closed after just three years. Known for its indulgent burgers and nachos, this downtown location had high hopes when it opened, riding on the coattails of Fieri’s celebrity chef status. Unfortunately, this marks Fieri’s second attempt in the city after Guy Fieri’s Tequila Cocina met a similar fate earlier this year. With the restaurant’s website already gone and phone lines silent, it seems the flame of this culinary venture has flickered out.
TsuruTonTan Takes a Bow
In the Fenway neighborhood, fans of Asian cuisine have also been dealt a blow with the closure of TsuruTonTan, a noodle shop located in the Hotel Commonwealth. This vibrant establishment enchanted diners with its comforting bowls of noodles but has recently announced its shutdown through an Instagram message, leaving followers hopeful for a potential new journey ahead.
Bagel Table and Taco Party Join the Ranks
If you’re a bagel lover, be prepared for some sad news as The Bagel Table has shuttered its original Chestnut Hill location after seven delightful years. Thankfully, those craving a bagel fix can still visit their other five locations. Meanwhile, Taco Party, the meatless Mexican restaurant based in Somerville, will also cease operations starting March 30, as the owner, Sarah Ramirez, prioritizes her health and well-being. To support the employees affected by this sudden closure, a fundraiser has been set up to help them through this rough patch.
Short-Lived Ventures and More Closures
In other news, The Cornerstone in Somerville, which was in operation for just over a year, has also closed its doors after receiving action from the Board of Health. In a troubling twist, Lobstah on a Roll in the South End appears to have closed, as a ‘for lease’ sign has been spotted outside, and their phone line has also gone quiet. Luckily, fans of Lobstah can still find their offerings at their Newbury Street location and an outlet down in Florida.
A Farewell to the Food Scene
As we reflect on these changes in the food landscape of our beloved Boston, it’s crucial to support the local eateries that remain open. Our vibrant city will always face ups and downs, but like any great feast, it’s about savoring what we have while we have it! Stay tuned for more updates, and let’s keep our hopes up for new delicious ventures to come!
