A picturesque blend of spring and winter in Boston, showcasing the city's unique weather patterns.
Boston is experiencing an early glimpse of spring with warmer temperatures, yet winter is reluctant to leave. Recent weather patterns remind residents of the potential for surprise snowfalls even in April. Weekend forecasts suggest a mix of warm days and possible rain or snow, urging Bostonians to remain prepared for fluctuating conditions as the seasons transition.
Boston has been enjoying a taste of spring as temperatures soared to what felt like May levels earlier in the week. With that lovely weather waving hello, residents were reminded just how delightful it can be to bask in the warmth of the sun. But before you put away your winter wardrobe for good, hold your horses! Winter isn’t quite finished with us yet.
This coming Friday, folks can expect to feel that warmth again as another stretch of snug temperatures makes its way into the Hub. Historically speaking, Boston’s weather can be a bit unpredictable during this time of year, and climate experts are urging us to exercise a little caution. Just because it’s warming up doesn’t mean winter has officially exited stage left. Some remember the famous April snowstorms, particularly in 1982 and 1997, that caught many off guard. Can you imagine liberally sprinkling the sunblock in April, only to find yourself shoveling snow? Well, it’s happened before!
Take a trip down memory lane with us for a moment. On April 6, 1982, Boston was blanketed with nearly 11 inches of snow! And let’s not forget the infamous April Fool’s Day blizzard in 1995, when nearly 2 feet of snow fell! Now, we’re not saying that history is bound to repeat itself, but climate data does show some interesting trends. Since 1990, the coldest temperatures from mid-March to early May have generally been warmer than pre-1968. This suggests that while the threat of snow isn’t as prevalent as it once was, we should still keep an eye out.
Just recently, Boston saw its last recorded snowfall of the 2023-24 winter season on April 4. Snowfall amounts ranged from 1 to 5 inches across Southern New England, which included various Boston suburbs. So, while spring is on our doorstep, let’s not forget the chill that can still bite. As sunlight gains strength comparable to late September, you might find that snowfall doesn’t stick around for long, especially as the day warms up. This means any snow that falls is likely to be more of a “sight” than a “problem.”
Looking forward, the next 10 days of weather forecasts show very little cold air making its way to Boston. By mid-April, we’re anticipating warmer-than-average conditions, so it’s time for budding plants to shine! Just remember, if those frosty nights come knocking unexpectedly, your gardens might need a little extra TLC. On the bright side, as last spring’s rainfall was above average, adequate moisture should help to replenish groundwater levels – a positive consideration as we progress into the warmer months.
This past warm spell had the thermostat hitting the low- to mid-60s, paired with sunny skies and gusty winds reaching up to 30 mph. The winds raised concerns about wildfires in the region, reminding everyone to be careful when enjoying the beautiful weather. However, don’t get too comfy yet! A cold front is expected to sweep through Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing temperatures tumbling back down to the mid-40s. Don’t forget your jackets!
As we slide into the weekend, don’t get too comfortable. Showers and the occasional snowflake could make an appearance late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, although we’re not expecting any significant accumulations. However, by Friday, we’re looking at a warm-up again, with temperatures nearing 50 and maybe even reaching the 60s by the weekend.
Watch out for a sprinkle of rain on Sunday evening into Monday following a dry Saturday. While Sunday is forecasted to climb into the mid-60s, we’re anticipating a 20-30% chance of rain. But don’t worry too much; meteorologists suggest that the showers might hold off until later in the day, giving us a fighting chance for some enjoyable St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
So, Boston, enjoy the warmth while it lasts, but be ready to snuggle back in your winter gear if the weather decides to switch things around. Happy spring!
