Sarnacki’s inspiring efforts highlight resilience and dedication to honoring those who have served.

East Otis Runner Takes on Boston Marathon to Honor Fallen Heroes

In the picturesque town of East Otis, Massachusetts, a remarkable young woman took on an extraordinary challenge as she participated in the Tough Ruck 26.2 during the Boston Marathon. Maggy Sarnacki, a dynamic sophomore at Salem State University, completed this grueling event not just for her own triumph, but in tribute to the memories of fallen military service members and first responders.

Breaking New Ground in Running

The Tough Ruck is a unique marathon that combines running with the added challenge of rucking—essentially sprinting while carrying a weighted backpack. For Sarnacki, this was her first attempt at such an arduous task, and she took on this endeavor in full army gear. Despite the challenges she encountered, Sarnacki finished the race in an impressive 8 hours and 52 minutes, demonstrating remarkable tenacity and spirit.

Remembering Heroes

With every step she took, Sarnacki carried the memories of Staff Sgt. Jacob “Jake” Galliher and the late Pittsfield Police Officer Michael Silver. Galliher, who served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, tragically lost his life in an Osprey V-22 crash off the coast of Japan back in November 2023. Silver dedicated 16 years of his life to serving the Pittsfield community, passing unexpectedly in October 2024. Sarnacki wore ribbons in their honor, keeping their legacies alive throughout the marathon.

Pushing Through Pain for a Purpose

As Sarnacki navigated the race, she faced not just emotional challenges but also the physical struggles of tired legs and aching feet. Yet, the beautiful weather on race day and the enthusiastic support from the community helped propel her forward. Spectators lined the route, cheering her on and reminding her of the importance of what she was doing. The energy from the crowd gave her the motivation to keep going.

Making a Difference

The Tough Ruck isn’t just a grueling race; it’s a way to give back. This event aims to honor fallen service members and raise funds to support their families. This year’s fundraising goal was $900,000. Sarnacki played her part in this noble mission and managed to raise over $1,000 through a fundraising effort initiated by her mother. By the following Monday, the Tough Ruck had already raised an astonishing $981,009, with contributions still rolling in.

A Proud Military Legacy

It is no surprise that Sarnacki has such a deep connection to this cause. Coming from a proud military family—her sister and both parents have served in the Air Force—she has always been inspired to serve. Currently, she is making her own mark in the Army National Guard, where she is enlisted with the 101st Field Artillery Regiment in Brockton. Beyond her military service, Sarnacki is also a dedicated student at Salem State, where she plays on the basketball team and pursues a major in exercise science.

Future Aspirations

But that’s not all! Sarnacki is also part of the Paul Revere Army ROTC program at MIT, with aspirations of becoming a medical services officer. The experience of the Tough Ruck taught her invaluable lessons on her resilience and has pushed her to explore the limits of her endurance.

Ready for Round Two?

Although the Tough Ruck presented significant challenges, Sarnacki hinted at the possibility of taking on the marathon again. For this inspiring young woman, every mile was not just about crossing the finish line, but rather about honoring the lives of those who sacrificed so much. With a heart full of gratitude and purpose, Sarnacki exemplifies the spirit of resilience and dedication that inspires those around her.
