Boston Kicks Off Boston250 with Annual Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride Reenactment

Boston is buzzing with excitement as it gears up for a remarkable event that will take place on April 18. This year, the annual reenactment of Paul Revere’s midnight ride is set to be the launchpad for Boston250, marking a significant moment in the celebration of Massachusetts’ 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.

The Historical Significance of Paul Revere’s Ride

The city is all abuzz about the historical significance of Revere’s ride, which is seen as a pivotal moment that ignited the spirit of resistance among the colonists. Mayor Michelle Wu expressed enthusiasm for this year’s festivities, which promise to engage both history buffs and newcomers to the story of American independence.

Packing the Evening with Activities

The reenactment festivities kick off at 8 p.m. outside the historic Paul Revere House at 19 North Square. But that’s not all! Visitors are invited to enjoy a plethora of activities gearing up to the main event. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Paul Revere House will open its doors for a free open house, offering a rare chance to meet reenactors portraying Paul Revere and his wife, Rachel.

If you’re looking for something hands-on, there are lantern workshops scheduled from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Paul Revere Mall. Participants can craft their very own paper lanterns to carry during the evening’s lantern-lit parade. Attendees at the USS Constitution Museum also have the chance to create wooden lanterns for those taking part in a parallel parade in Charlestown.

Celebrating Community and History

The festivities don’t stop there. At 6:30 p.m., the official launch of Boston250 will feature a free performance of the play “Revolution’s Edge” at Paul Revere Mall. This will be accompanied by speeches from local officials who will emphasize the importance of the history being celebrated.

Old North Church will host a lantern service at 7:00 p.m., where historian Heather Cox Richardson will take the stage for the keynote address, setting the tone for the historic evening ahead.

The Grand Midnight Ride

As the clock strikes 8:00 p.m., Revere will take off on his legendary ride, leading a parade illuminated by lanterns. Spectators can join in the excitement as they follow him to the waterfront. At 8:15 p.m., two lanterns will dramatically rise in the Old North Church steeple, signaling the advance of British forces by sea.

Meanwhile, attendees will be treated to the breathtaking sight of Revere as he crosses Boston Harbor. From the US Coast Guard Station, he’ll row across the Charles River, with visitors in Charlestown Navy Yard warmly greeting him at Pier 1. For those eager to experience this moment from the water, a ticketed harbor cruise is available, offering a unique view of Revere’s crossing.

Welcoming Revere in Charlestown

As Revere reaches Charlestown at 8:30 p.m., he’ll be welcomed by Deacon John Larkin and the Charlestown militia in Charlestown City Square. In a fitting tribute to history, city archaeologist Joe Bagley will deliver a speech highlighting Charlestown’s significance leading up to the Revolutionary War.

As the night unfolds, the reenactment continues with Revere’s iconic call, “The Regulars are out!” at 9:10 p.m. Following his departure, the Bunker Hill Monument will be illuminated at 9:30 p.m., with flags flown during its 1843 opening, casting a warm glow over the historic site. This spectacular illumination will continue nightly until July 4, reminding everyone of the rich legacy being celebrated.

Engaging the Community

This event not only honors the legacy of Paul Revere but also serves as a celebration that actively engages the community in a historical reflection. As Boston embarks on this exciting milestone with Boston250, residents and visitors alike are invited to come together and embrace the spirit of history in an unforgettable way.
