Notable upcoming tournaments include the Providence College Athletic Director’s Cup and the Driving Away Parkinson’s Disease Tournament. Local player Bobby Leopold has made headlines by winning his fifth State Amateur title, and several major events are on the horizon for golf fans. Get ready for an action-packed season ahead!
As the sun begins to shine a little brighter and the flowers bloom, golf enthusiasts in Rhode Island are buzzing with excitement. The much-anticipated golf season is upon us, kicking off with none other than The Masters. This prestigious event ushers in a line-up of tournaments that promise thrilling action on the greens and, importantly, the chance to support local causes.
Golf lovers, grab your calendars! Numerous tournaments are set to take place at some of Rhode Island’s most esteemed golf clubs. Participating not only offers some incredible golf but also contributes to meaningful local charities.
Mark your calendars for the Providence College 2025 Athletic Director’s Cup happening at the Misquamicut Club on May 14. Get ready to swing for a good cause at a cost of $2,000 for singles and $8,000 for a foursome.
Just a couple of weeks later, on May 27, grab your clubs for the Rhody Excellence “Fore the Players” Golf Outing at Point Judith Country Club. Participate for a fee of $1,250 for singles or $5,000 for a group of four.
The action continues on June 2 with several tournaments, including the Naval War College Foundation Newport Open at Newport Country Club. A single entry costs $1,000. You can also take part in the Thundermist Health Center Tournament at Sakonnet Golf Club for $3,000 per foursome.
If you’re interested in making an impact, don’t miss out on the Driving Away Parkinson’s Disease Tournament at Quidnessett Country Club, also on June 2, where entry fees are $275 for singles and $1,100 for a foursome.
As June rolls in, circle June 9 for two more great events: the Richard Bornstein Memorial Dwares JCC Golf Classic at Warwick Country Club at $350 for singles and $1,300 for foursomes, as well as the Leadership Rhode Island Golf Classic at Wannamoisett Country Club, where entry will cost $375 per individual or $1,500 for a team.
Later in July, don’t miss the Hasbro Children’s Golf Invitational on July 21 at the Rhode Island Country Club, with a fee of $2,000 for singles or $8,000 for a foursome.
And let’s not forget about the lovely fall weather on September 15 during the Adoption Rhode Island tournament at Shelter Harbor, costing $2,500 per foursome, plus an additional fee for a tee sign.
This year has seen quite an achievement on the greens, as Bobby Leopold recently claimed the State Amateur title for the fifth time! His win came after a thrilling 39-hole match against rival Michael Hamilton, noted for being the longest match in championship history. This victory marks his second title in a row and third in the past four years, earning him the rightful place among an elite group of players.
Leopold’s children were by his side during the playoff, providing much-needed support. The event also showcased the importance of community, as many golf fans came out to cheer him on, despite the storms that interrupted rounds.
Looking ahead, keep an eye out for the Northeast Amateur, Travelers Championship, and U.S. Senior Open, all of which promise to bring top-tier talent and exhilarating play to Rhode Island.
The U.S. Senior Open will take place at the historic Newport Country Club, with many iconic former champions expected to grace the greens. Additionally, TPC Boston will host the LPGA’s 2024 FM Global Championship in August, marking its exciting return to professional golf events.
