A community memorial at the site of the pedestrian accident in South Boston.
In a tragic event on January 12, Francisco Romero has been charged with manslaughter after a deadly collision with pedestrian Noah Greany in South Boston. The incident occurred when Romero’s vehicle veered into oncoming traffic, leading to Greany’s fatal injuries. Romero, who was allegedly under the influence, was arraigned on multiple serious charges and faces a $100,000 bail. The local community is mourning Greany’s loss and supporting his family, who plan to honor him with a foundation for cancer research.
In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the community in shock, a South Boston man, Francisco Romero, 47, has been charged with manslaughter following a deadly accident that took the life of a 27-year-old pedestrian. Romero found himself in South Boston Municipal Court recently, where he was arraigned on multiple serious charges including motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation and driving under the influence (OUI).
The tragic event unfolded around 9:20 a.m. on January 12, when Romero was driving on Southampton Street toward Dorchester Avenue. In a harrowing turn of events, he veered into oncoming traffic, striking Noah Greany, who was walking home from a local Dunkin’ Donuts. The impact was severe, sending Greany flying into the intersection and tragically leading to his death shortly after arriving at the Boston Medical Center.
After the accident, Romero’s vehicle crashed into a local restaurant, Small Victories, located at 400 Dorchester Avenue. Both he and his passenger were rushed to Tufts Medical Center following the collision, highlighting the severity of the crash.
Tests conducted later revealed Romero’s blood alcohol content to be between .091 and .096, well over the legal limit of .08. He now faces a challenging legal battle, having pleaded not guilty to all charges. The presiding judge, Margaret F. Albertson, set bail at $100,000 and scheduled a probable cause hearing for May 2.
Interestingly, Romero hasn’t faced serious legal troubles in the past. In 2019, he was charged with negligent use of a motor vehicle, but that case was continued without a finding. Representing him, attorney Virgen M. Palermo, argued for a much lower bail, highlighting Romero’s long-standing employment and family responsibilities.
Romero has six children, including five-year-old twins, and was reportedly dropping off his partner at her job at the time of the accident. He purchased his vehicle used for $2,500, and Palermo mentioned that the car had shown signs of ongoing issues, being frequently taken for repairs.
Noah Greany, the young man who lost his life, was a recent graduate of Northeastern University, armed with degrees in cellular and molecular biology and bioinformatics enterprise. He was employed with the Hayden Consulting Group and had aspirations of making significant contributions to the field. The day of the accident, he was returning to his apartment after visiting his girlfriend.
Greany’s family is heartbroken over the loss of their beloved son. Described by his mother as having tremendous potential, they plan to establish the Noah Curtis Greany Foundation in his memory, aiming to further his dream of researching cures for cancer.
This tragic case has left the South Boston community grappling with feelings of sorrow and anger. As Romero prepares for his court hearing, many are left wondering how such an incident could have occurred and how lives can change in an instant.
