Passengers boarding the new South Coast Rail train at Fall River station

News Summary

Fall River is gearing up for the much-anticipated return of the South Coast Rail service on March 24, 2025. This historic launch marks the first passenger rail service in 65 years, promising to enhance transportation options and stimulate local economic growth. With free rides offered for a month, the new Fall River/New Bedford Line connects various local stations, making travel more accessible for residents and visitors. This revival is viewed as a significant win for the community, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and support local businesses.

Exciting Times Ahead as South Coast Rail Makes a Comeback!

The city of Fall River is buzzing with excitement as the much-anticipated South Coast Rail service is set to welcome its first passengers on Monday, March 24, 2025. This marks a historic moment for the region, being the first time in a staggering 65 years that passenger rail service will be available!

A Welcome Transportation Option

Residents and visitors alike can rejoice in this new travel opportunity, as Governor Maura Healey has expressed her enthusiasm about the many benefits this service will bring. From alleviating traffic congestion to supporting local businesses and spurring economic development, the South Coast Rail is more than just a ride; it’s a lifeline for the community.

Celebrations with Free Rides!

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is offering some fantastic perks! How does a full month and a bit of FREE travel sound? From March 24 through the end of April, there’s no cost for weekend travel and parking on the Fall River/New Bedford Line. And it doesn’t stop there—weekdays will also see free rides through the end of March! What a great way to encourage residents to hop on board and explore the new service without worrying about their wallets.

All Aboard the New Line!

The new South Coast Rail line will replace the previously known Middleborough/Lakeville Line, now officially dubbed the Fall River/New Bedford Line. This line will service six stations: East Taunton, Freetown, Fall River Depot, Church Street, and New Bedford, which means plenty of stops for locals and travelers alike.

For those with busy schedules, fear not! Commuter friendly service will run every 70 minutes on weekdays with a total of 32 direct trips to or from South Station. On weekends, how about 26 trips running every two hours? It’s all about making commuting easy and accessible for everyone!

Parking Made Simple!

Good news for those who prefer to drive—there’s ample parking at all six stations! For those planning to take advantage of this new service, parking will be free from March 24 through April 30, 2025. After that period, the standard rates will kick in at $4 per day on weekdays and just $2 for weekends/holidays.

A Community Victory

This revival of the rail service is not only a major win for commuters, but also for local lawmakers and advocates who have worked hard for this project. With the construction costing a hefty $1.1 billion, expectations are high, and rightly so! This service is set to connect not just the city of Fall River, but also New Bedford, Taunton, and Middleborough to the vibrant heart of downtown Boston.

Get Ready to Ride!

Of course, while the excitement builds, it’s important for potential passengers to prepare for the new service. Tickets will be made available for purchase starting on launch day. Passengers have the option to snag their tickets through the mTicket app or simply by paying in cash onboard.

Oh, and don’t forget, if you’re looking to ride on Patriots Day, April 21, 2025, you can again enjoy free service! The last train from Boston will even leave just before midnight, ensuring late-night service options for those hopping home after a long day or night out.

As the countdown begins, Fall River is poised to embrace a new chapter, offering residents an exciting travel option while fueling local growth. So grab your friends and family, and get ready to explore all that this new rail service has to offer!
